American Glass Works, founded in 2000, is a glass blowers collective that has been linking individual glass artists and customers for over ten years.

Every pipe is a unique design, made only by the artist and no one else. All of the artists are self-employed and work from their own space, creating their own unique designs. These artists are solely responsible for the production. The pipe you purchase was designed and created by the same person. Some glass operations operate differently, by setting up a warehouse, employing glass blowers, and instructing them to make certain generic designs that are easily made by numerous people. This type of operation is capable of more volume, but they lose out on the personal touch and the person who buys the pipe winds up with a generic design that is easy to reproduce but lacks character and are often of poor quality.

The goal of American Glass Works is to offer unique designs of the highest quality and to support creative, independent glass artists.

When you purchase one of our pipes, you are getting a direct connection to the designer who put his heart and soul into the effort to ensure that you get a pipe that is well-made, of the highest quality, and that represents the artist's creative abilities and craftsmanship.

The ideals of sustainability and community are important to American Glass Works. It is a family operation, not big business. They are anything but corporate types.

Every pipe that is offered on grasscity.com was made in Oregon, most from Eugene, the epicenter of the hand-blown glass business. Glass pipe-making started in Eugene; the first glass pipe ever created was made in Eugene by Bob Snodgrass. Glass artists from all over the country have gone to Eugene to learn the craft. Those that are good enough, stay. Those that are not, move on or become employed by the warehouse sweatshop operations. When you purchase a glass pipe from American Glass Works, you are getting work from the best in the entire industry, those who have become proficient enough to remain self-employed in Eugene.

It's not easy, the competition is incredibly high and only the best survive. Anything that happens in the glass business, happens in Eugene first, all of the newest colors, the latest designs and ideas, it all comes from Eugene.
