As your burning herb passes through the removable downstem (which can be easily removed for cleaning), it interacts with water to be cleansed from excess residue and to cool.

After this initial phase, it will enter the first of two showerhead percolators to further diffuse and be increased in surface area. This increase in surface area allows your smoke to cool even more rapidly, but before it re-condenses it will be filtered once more through the second showerhead percolator for maximum effect. A traditional 3-pinch ice catcher sits low on the straight neck so you can use multiple ice cubes to cool your smoke to your liking, so if one day you want very smooth hits while the next you would prefer a stronger rip, the options and features are all there! They don’t call it an ice bong for nothing!
