Fixing a Stuck Downstem

- Empty the bong. Get all the water out first.
- Isolate the joint. You're only treating where the downstem meets the joint, not the whole piece.
- Soak it in isopropyl alcohol (91% or higher works best) for 15 to 20 minutes. Can't submerge it? Wrap the joint in an alcohol-soaked cotton ball or paper towel instead.
- Add a little warmth if it's still stubborn. Running warm, not hot, water over the outside of the joint helps loosen things further.
- Twist, don't pull. Hold the base steady and rotate the downstem slowly and evenly. Never yank it straight out.
- Give it another round if needed. A second 15 to 20 minute soak is completely normal for a piece that's really stuck. This isn't always a one-and-done fix.

Clearing a Clogged Percolator

- Cap the openings and shake. The salt works as a gentle abrasive, reaching into slits a brush never could.
- Let it sit. Heavy buildup responds better to a 30-minute or overnight soak than a bunch of quick shakes.
- Rinse well with hot water, then check airflow by blowing gently through the stem before putting it back together.
Deep percolator slits are usually the slowest part to clear. If your draw still feels tight after one soak, that's normal for a heavily clogged piece, not a sign you did something wrong. Give it another round instead of reaching for something sharp.
