Thick Glass Bongs: 5mm, 7mm & 9mm Heavy Glass

Built to Handle Real Use

A bong counts as "thick" once its glass hits about 5mm in wall thickness, with 7mm and 9mm marking the heavy end of the range. That extra glass matters most where it counts: the base, the joint, and the mouthpiece, the spots most likely to take a knock during a normal session.

Thicker walls mean a bong can survive drops and bumps that would crack a standard piece. It's the main reason thick glass costs a bit more, and for most smokers, it's worth it.

How Thick Should a Bong Be?

Most everyday thick bongs fall in the 5mm to 7mm range. That's enough extra glass to survive typical handling without adding much weight or changing how the piece feels to hold.

5mm: a solid step up from standard glass, noticeably sturdier without feeling heavy
7mm: the most common "thick glass" spec, a good balance of durability and weight
9mm: the heaviest option we stock, built for smokers who want maximum durability and don't mind the extra weight

9mm Thick Bongs

A 9mm bong is about as thick as glass gets in a functional piece. It's noticeably heavier in hand, which also means it's more stable on a table or shelf. If breakage is your biggest concern, this is the thickness to look for.

Is 9mm Glass Worth It Over 5mm or 7mm?

It depends on what you're optimizing for.

Go with 9mm if durability and stability matter more than anything else, or if you've broken a bong before and don't want a repeat
Go with 5mm or 7mm if you'd rather have something lighter and easier to handle, especially if you move your piece around often

Neither option filters or hits any differently. The difference is purely how much abuse the glass can take.

Thick Beakers vs. Thick Straight Tubes

Thick Beaker Bongs

A wide, stable base makes thick beaker bongs harder to tip over in the first place, on top of the extra glass. That combination makes them a strong pick if stability matters as much as wall thickness.

Thick Straight Tube Bongs

Straight tubes have a smaller footprint and a simpler shape, with less surface area to knock into something. What they trade for that compact shape is a narrower base, so they can be easier to tip than a beaker of the same thickness.

Thick Glass Bongs with Percolators

Adding a percolator, whether it's a tree, matrix, or inline perc, doesn't affect wall thickness. You can get the added filtration of a percolator bong in 5mm, 7mm, or 9mm glass, so thickness and filtration are two separate choices to make, not a trade-off.

Which Brands Make the Thickest Glass?

A handful of brands are known specifically for heavy glass builds:

ROOR and Black Leaf: established German glass brands known for consistently thick, durable builds
Ehle and G-Spot: German-made pieces that regularly run in the 5mm to 7mm range
Blaze Glass: known for thick borosilicate construction at a more accessible price point
GC: Grasscity's own house line, including several thick beaker and straight tube bongs at a lower price than imported brands

Frequently Asked Questions

Are thicker bongs better?

Better for durability and stability, yes. Better in every sense, not necessarily. Thicker glass adds weight and cost without changing how smooth a hit is, so it's a trade-off between how much abuse you want your piece to survive and how light you want it to be.

What's the thickest bong glass you can buy?

Our thickest pieces run up to 9mm, which is about as heavy as functional bong glass gets without becoming impractical to hold or move. Anything beyond that trades usability for durability you likely won't notice a difference in.

Is 9mm glass too heavy for a bong?

Not too heavy to use, but noticeably heavier than a standard piece. Most smokers find 9mm comfortable at home, on a stable surface. If you move your bong around often, a 5mm or 7mm piece will feel easier to handle day to day.

Does thick glass change how a bong hits?

No. Wall thickness is purely a durability factor. How smooth a hit feels comes down to the design, like percolators, chamber size, and diffusion, not how thick the glass is. A thin bong and a thick bong with the same percolator setup will hit the same way.

How do you tell how thick a bong's glass is?

Check the product listing first, since thickness is usually stated in the specs. If you're comparing in person, you can measure at the mouthpiece or joint rim with calipers, since those are the easiest spots to get an accurate reading on wall thickness.

What's the difference between a thick beaker bong and a thick straight tube?

Both come in the same thickness range, so the real difference is shape. A beaker's wide base adds stability on top of the thick glass, while a straight tube is more compact but easier to tip. Neither shape changes how much abuse the glass itself can take.
