A hookah, narghile, or shisha is a single or multi-stemmed water pipe smoking device for consuming tobacco-free herbs, or tobacco mixes that are often sweetened with fruit pulp, molasses, or honey.

Hookah pipes are thought to have originated in either India or Persia in the 1500s and hookah use has gained popularity over the years, especially in the Arab World and among young adults who enjoy social smoking at home and in hookah bars.

Hookah shishas use water for added filtration and cleaning of the smoke and heat your material with ignited hookah charcoals. They often come equipped with multiple hookah hoses enabling several people to smoke together from one hookah device at the same time. This makes them the perfect smoking device to share with friends for the ultimate group smoking session.

A hookah consists of a water chamber, a downstem, hoses, and a hookah bowl containing burning charcoal that is placed on top of the flavored tobacco with metal tongs. The charcoal is separated from tobacco by a metal HMD sheet or a perforated sheet of aluminum foil.

As the charcoal heats the hookah tobacco below, smoke is created. As you inhale through the mouthpiece of the attached hose, the smoke is pulled through the water chamber, for added cooling and cleaning before it enters your lungs. Some models even feature a release valve to remove stagnate smoke.
