The History of 420

420 Cannabis Culture has taken the world by storm, a slang term for marijuana or hashish consumption, usually at the time of 16.20. Since 1991, an annual holiday has also taken place on April 20 (4/20) at various locations across the US. On this day, many head shops, including Grasscity, also offer discounts on select products.

420 dates back to 1971 when five Californian students used the term 4:20 to describe their plan to locate an abandoned cannabis crop that supposedly could be found with a treasure map drawn out by the grower.

Dubbing themselves the Waldos, Steve Capper, Dave Reddix, Jeffrey Noel, Larry Schwartz, and Mark Gravich met at the Louis Pasteur statue on the grounds of San Rafael High School at 4.20 pm. The plan was originally known as “4.20 Louis” but after several attempts to find the crop, this was then shortened to just “4.20”

Over time, the term 4.20 established itself among high school students as a code word for smoking cannabis.
