Bong Accessories: Bowls, Stems & Ash Catchers

Everything Your Bong Needs to Work

A bong accessory is any part that isn't the main water chamber itself: the bowl, the downstem, ash catchers, adapters, and cleaning gear. Every bong needs at least a bowl and a downstem to function, and matching the right size and style to your piece makes the difference between a smooth session and a leaky, clogged one.

Bong Parts, Explained

Here's what each part does, from the top of your bong down to the base:

Mouthpiece: where you inhale from, at the top of the chamber
Chamber: the main body that holds water and smoke
Percolator: an optional internal piece that diffuses smoke into smaller bubbles for a smoother hit
Joint: the connection point where your downstem and bowl attach
Downstem: the tube that carries smoke down into the water
Bowl: where you load your herb, sitting on top of the downstem

How to Match Accessories to Your Joint Size

Every joint has a size, most commonly 14mm or 18mm, and a gender, male or female. Getting this wrong is the most common reason a new bowl or downstem doesn't fit.

To check your joint size:

Look for the size listed in your bong's original product description, if you still have it
Measure across the joint opening with calipers, or compare it against a coin: close to a dime is 18mm, close to a pinky's width is 14mm
Check whether the joint sticks out (male) or has an opening (female), since your new part needs the opposite

If your existing accessories don't match your bong's joint, a bong adapter bridges the gap, whether that's a size mismatch or a gender mismatch.

Must-Have Bong Accessories

If you're building out a full setup, these are the pieces worth having on hand:

A bowl, sized to your joint
A downstem, ideally a diffused one for smoother hits
An ash catcher, to keep resin out of your main chamber
A bong adapter, in case your parts don't match
A cleaning solution or kit, for regular maintenance

14mm vs. 18mm Attachments

14mm is the more common size and tends to offer a slightly more controlled draw. 18mm allows more airflow and is typically found on larger bongs. If you're not sure which you have, measuring is more reliable than guessing based on your bong's size alone. Our full guide to downstem sizes and types breaks this down further.

Ash Catcher Bong Attachments

An ash catcher sits between your bowl and your bong, catching ash and resin before it reaches your main water chamber. That keeps your bong cleaner for longer and, with diffuser-style ash catchers, adds an extra layer of filtration. Browse our full range of ash catchers and precoolers to find one that matches your joint size and angle.

Bong Accessories for Dabs

Several bong accessories cross over to dab rigs, since both use the same joint and downstem system. A bong adapter can convert a bowl slot to accept a banger, and diffused downstems work the same way whether you're smoking flower or vaporizing concentrate. If your bong already has the right joint size, you may only need an adapter to start dabbing with it.

Frequently Asked Questions

What accessories do I need for a new bong?

Every bong needs a bowl and a downstem at minimum, sized to match your joint. Beyond that, an ash catcher keeps your main chamber cleaner, and a bong adapter is worth having on hand in case a replacement part doesn't match your joint size or gender. See our bowls and downstems to get started.

Do all bowls and downstems fit every bong?

No. Bowls and downstems come in specific joint sizes, most commonly 14mm and 18mm, and in male or female fittings that need to match your bong's joint. Measure your joint with calipers or a coin before buying, and use a bong adapter if your existing parts don't match a new piece.

Is an ash catcher really worth it?

Yes, especially if you smoke often. An ash catcher keeps resin and ash from building up inside your bong's main chamber, which means less frequent deep cleaning and a cleaner-tasting hit. It also adds a bit of extra filtration if you choose a diffuser-style ash catcher.

What are the parts of a bong called?

The main parts are the mouthpiece, chamber, joint, downstem, and bowl, with an optional percolator for extra filtration. See the labeled breakdown above for what each part does and how they connect.

What's the difference between 14mm and 18mm attachments?

14mm is the more common size, offering a bit more control over your draw. 18mm allows more airflow and generally pairs with larger bongs. Both sizes have their own bowls, downstems, and ash catchers, so check your joint size before buying any replacement part.

Which bong accessories also work for dabs?

Downstems and bong adapters typically cross over between flower and concentrates, since dab rigs use the same joint system as bongs. With the right adapter, you can often add a banger to an existing bong and use it for dabbing without buying a separate rig.

What are some cool bong accessories beyond the basics?

Ice catchers let you add ice above the water for a colder hit, silicone joint caps protect your bowl or banger between sessions, and glass carb caps help control airflow for dabbing. None of these are essential, but they're popular upgrades once you've got the basics covered.
