Hand Pipes: Glass Spoons, Sherlocks & More | Grasscity

How Do You Choose the Right Hand Pipe?

Pick the shape first: spoon pipes for pockets, sherlock pipes for a flat base, steamroller pipes for direct pulls and chillums for slim carry. Then check wall thickness, bowl depth and whether there is a carb hole. For daily use, thicker glass is the safer buy.

How Do You Use a Hand Pipe?

Pack, light, and clear.

Pack the bowl loosely with a light, even layer.
Cover the carb hole, if there is one, and light while inhaling slowly.
Release the carb to clear the smoke.
Tap out the ash and let the glass cool.
Wipe the mouthpiece after every session.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is a hand pipe?

A small pipe you hold in one hand, with a bowl on one end and a mouthpiece on the other. Glass versions are the most popular for clean flavor.

What is the difference between a spoon and a sherlock?

A spoon is a short, rounded pipe, while a sherlock has a long curved neck and a flat base. Sherlocks sit upright on a table, spoons are easier to pocket.

How do I choose a glass hand pipe?

Start with size and shape, then check wall thickness and bowl depth. Thicker glass lasts longer in a bag, and a deeper bowl holds more.

Does a carb hole matter?

Yes on spoons and sherlocks. Covering it lets you build smoke, and releasing it clears the bowl in one pull.

How do I clean a glass hand pipe?

Soak it in iso and coarse salt, shake, rinse with warm water and dry. Our Cleaning Supplies collection has brushes and soak kits.

Are glass hand pipes fragile?

Borosilicate is tougher than it looks, but a hard drop can still crack it. A padded case or a Dugout Pipes set helps.

How much do glass hand pipes cost?

Prices here run from about $7 to $99, with a median near $28. Frit and fumed spoons are the easiest on the budget. For more, see our guide: Spoon Pipes vs. Other Pipes: Which is Best for You?.
