How do Percolator Bongs work?

Scientifically speaking, percolation refers to the process of filtering fluids through a porous surface and comes from the Latin term for filtration or “to trickle through”. This process of filtration takes place within the percolator of the bong.

Percolators inside bongs are systems designed with small holes inside. These holes allow smoke to pass through gradually. In a regular bong, smoke will interact with the water in the chamber and pass directly into your lungs. However, a percolator bong provides secondary filtration and cooling as the smoke has to pass through the holes of the percolator and diffuse across the percolator surface.

Cleaning a percolator bong is very similar to cleaning a regular bong. The only difference is that you have to take extra care when cleaning the percolator, or multiple percolators if you opt for a more sophisticated design.

One of the best solutions for cleaning your percolator bong is isopropyl alcohol. It can be used to soak your bong and will remove any unwanted leftover residue. One you’re satisfied that the alcohol has done its job, give your bong a rinse with fresh water and let it drain and dry before using it again.
