Spoon Pipes: Glass Hand Pipes for Every Budget

Simple, Reliable, and Always in Stock

A spoon pipe is the classic hand pipe: a bowl at one end, a carb hole on the side, and a short stem down to the mouthpiece. No water, no setup, just pack and go.

That simplicity is exactly why spoon pipes remain the most popular pipe style around. Our catalog spans hundreds of options in glass, metal, wood, and silicone, in every price range from pocket-change basics to hand-blown art pieces.

Which Spoon Pipe Should You Pick?

A few details make the difference between a pipe you love and one that sits in a drawer:

Size: smaller pipes are easier to pocket and conceal, while larger pipes hold more and stay cooler to hold
Carb placement: most spoon pipes have a carb hole on the side of the bowl, which you cover with a finger and release to clear the chamber
Glass thickness: thicker glass survives drops better and tends to run a little more expensive

Budget Spoon Pipes

Cheap doesn't mean flimsy here. Our lower-priced spoon pipes still use the same borosilicate glass as our pricier pieces, just with simpler designs and less hand-finishing work. If you want something reliable to keep as a backup or take somewhere it might get lost, this is the category to start with.

Materials: Glass, Metal & Silicone Spoon Pipes

Glass is the most common material, and for good reason: it doesn't affect flavor, it's easy to clean, and it lets you see how much resin has built up. Borosilicate glass in particular resists cracking from heat better than standard glass.

Metal spoon pipes trade some of that flavor purity for durability. They're close to indestructible and easy to clean, but many smokers find they can affect taste over time.

Silicone spoon pipes are close to unbreakable and simple to clean, often with a removable glass bowl insert to get glass-quality flavor with silicone-level durability.

Spoon Pipe vs. Sherlock vs. Bubbler

Not sure a spoon pipe is the right shape for you? Here's how it stacks up:

Spoon vs. Sherlock: spoon pipes are more compact and easier to clean, while Sherlock pipes tend to run thicker and have a distinct curved shape. Read our full spoon pipe vs. Sherlock pipe comparison for the details.
Spoon vs. other styles: if you're weighing a spoon against chillums, steamrollers, or other pipe styles, our spoon pipes vs. other pipe styles guide breaks down the trade-offs.

Frequently Asked Questions

Are spoon pipes a good option?

Yes. Spoon pipes are discreet, pocket-sized, and need no water or setup, which makes them one of the simplest ways to smoke. They're also easy to find replacement parts for and simple to clean compared to more elaborate pipe styles.

How do you use a spoon pipe, including the carb?

Pack your dry herb loosely into the bowl, light it while covering the carb hole with a finger, then release the carb as you inhale to clear the chamber. The carb controls airflow, so covering it builds up smoke and releasing it clears the pipe in one smooth pull.

What are spoon pipes made from?

Most spoon pipes are made from borosilicate glass, though metal, wood, and silicone versions are also common. See the materials section above for how each option compares on flavor, durability, and cleaning.

How do you clean a spoon pipe?

Soak it in isopropyl alcohol with a bit of coarse salt for 15 to 30 minutes, shaking occasionally to loosen resin, then rinse thoroughly with warm water. Our full glass pipe cleaning guide covers alcohol-free methods too, along with tips for tougher buildup.

What's the difference between a spoon pipe and a bowl?

"Bowl" is often used informally to mean the same thing as a spoon pipe, especially the part where you pack your herb. Technically, the bowl is just the bulb-shaped chamber at one end of a spoon pipe, not the whole piece, but the two terms get used interchangeably in everyday conversation.

What's the difference between a spoon pipe and a bubbler?

A bubbler adds water filtration to the same basic pipe shape, which cools and smooths the smoke the way a bong does. A spoon pipe skips the water entirely, trading some smoothness for a simpler, more portable design with nothing to spill or clean out.

Which spoon pipe size is best for a first pipe?

A mid-size pipe, around 3.5 to 4.5 inches, is a solid starting point. It's large enough to hold comfortably and pack a reasonable amount, but still small enough to pocket easily. You can always add a smaller or larger piece to your collection later.

Why does my spoon pipe get hot, and does thicker glass help?

Heat travels up through the bowl as you smoke, and thinner glass conducts that heat faster to where you're holding it. Thicker glass, generally 5mm or more, holds heat longer before it reaches your hand, which is one of the main reasons thicker pieces cost more.
